Experimenty jsme prováděli vsádkově a v kolonových testech s různými typy železa.

Abstract

Chlorinated solvents, such as tetrachlorethene (PCE) and trichlorethene (TCE) are very frequent groundwater pollutants. Chlorinated hydrocarbons are widely used in a range of industries including dry cleaning, metal parts fabrication and insecticide and herbicide production. Chlorophenols were mainly used as pesticides and fungicides or as a wood preservation. Their leaching from industrial zones causes the ground water contamination in surrounding areas. Permeable reactive barriers containing zero-valent iron are effective for removal of these compounds from contaminated groundwater.

In the present thesis, reaction pathways, efficiency and reaction products of the reactions of chlorinated compounds with zero-valent iron were investigated. Moreover, the effect of factors such as iron pre-treatment and pH and composition of groundwater on the reaction of PCE with zero-valent iron were investigated. Experiments were carried out in batch and column systems.

Prevailing reaction products of chlorinated ethenes were hydrocarbons and chloride ions. The reaction runs via TCE, 1,2-dichlorethenes (DCEs), 1,1-DCE and vinyl chloride (VC) to ethylen. Positive effect acid pre-treatment of iron was also identified. The possibility of use of zero-valent iron for decontamination of groundwater was verified treating real samples of contaminated groundwater from several localities: Přeštice site, Liberec area and Milovice site. Dehalogenation of chlorinated phenols, chloroquinones and chlorohydroquinones by zero-valent iron was also investigated. No intermediate products of the dehalogenation reaction were found. Adsorption of these compounds on iron was probably responsible for the removal of the chlorinated aromatic compounds from solution.

Reactions with zero-valent iron are frequently described with first order kinetics. However, it was shown in the present thesis that more sophisticated model is needed for exact modeling of these reactions. The dehalogenation reactions were modeled by non-stationary model of heterogenous reactions, included specific surface area and adsorption and desorption reactions. Successful application of the latter kinetic model to experimental data from dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons was performed.
