The project focuses on the development and implementation of a method for efficiently recovering phosphorus from sludge water generated during the dewatering of anaerobically stabilized sewage sludge at municipal wastewater treatment plants. This approach enables the recovery of phosphorus as an essential nutrient for plant nutrition in agriculture, while simultaneously reducing the amount of phosphorus circulating in sludge water within municipal treatment plants—an issue that leads to spontaneous struvite precipitation in technological equipment and pipelines, impairing plant functionality.
The recovered phosphorus will be produced in a form accessible to plant root systems, which will be verified through parallel cultivation experiments. The selected method will then be transferred to and validated in a semi-operational unit at a suitable municipal wastewater treatment facility.
The project “Phosphorus Recycling from Sludge Water in a Form Suitable for Agricultural Use” is co-financed with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of the Environment under the “Environment for Life” programme. This project was funded through the National Recovery Plan from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility.
