Project goals

The aim of the project is to mitigate methane emissions from wastewater management processes, including sewer networks and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which is an essential step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making better use of emitted methane. Using a highly sensitive, methane-specific LiDAR system, we will identify the main sources of leaks within sewer networks as well as sludge and gas management operations at WWTPs. A smart unit will prevent methane formation directly within the sewer system through advanced aeration control. To eliminate process-related methane emissions from wastewater treatment, we will develop an advanced mathematical model based on our own detection campaign. Methane present in waste gases from the storage of digested sludge will be oxidized in an optimized biofilter and partially converted into biomass.
