Suspenze tvořené při G d 45 s-1 (s vysokým podílem velkých, porézních a nepravidelných agregátů) byly zachycovány pouze v horní vrstvě filtračního materiálu a nepronikaly do celého objemu filtračního lože. Naproti tomu agregáty tvořené při G e 200 s-1 (velikostně homogenní suspenze s malými, kompaktními a pravidelnými agregáty) pronikaly do celého objemu filtračního lože, poskytovaly nejdelší filtrační cykly a vytvářely minimální tlakovou ztrátu.

Abstract

The thesis deals with the evaluation of properties of aggregates formed in the water treatment process. At first, the effect of the global shear rate on aggregate properties during aggregation and at steady state is studied in a laboratory scale. Consequently, the properties of aggregates formed in a pilot plant scale are characterized and the effect of these properties on the filterability of formed aggregates is explored.

Natural raw surface water and ferric destabilisation (coagulation) reagent were used in the experiments. The suspension formation was carried out in a Taylor-Couette reactor in the laboratory scale and in a pilot plant (mixing tank with a paddle stirrer) that contained also a rapid gravity filter for the filterability evaluation. The methods of image and fractal analysis were used to determine the aggregate size and structure.

It was observed that at the early phase of aggregation, the aggregate growth rate is higher for lower shear rates. At G d 150 s-1, the time aggregation curve contains the local maximum before reaching the steady state. Moreover, the different extent of break-up and restructuring was proved for different values of shear rate. At G e 200 s-1, the aggregation curve misses the local extreme completely and the system reaches steady state right after the growth phase. Break-up or restructuring does not occur at all from the global point of view.

Further, it was found that with increasing shear rate, the aggregates are smaller, more compact and more regular and the suspension is more homogeneous regardless the mixing device used. After plotting the dependence of the aggregate size on the shear rate in the logarithmic scale, three regions were observed in the graph. Two outer regions which can be characterised by the power function represents a situation when either adhesion or hydrodynamic force prevails. For the characterization of the intermediate region where both forces are in balance, there was not enough detailed data available. A relationship for the description of dependence of fractal dimension on the shear rate was suggested.

The analysis of aggregate filterability showed that aggregate properties did not affect the separation efficiency of Fe, TOC or turbidity, but they significantly influenced the effectiveness of the filtration itself. The suspensions formed at G d 45 s-1 (with a high proportion of large, porous and irregular aggregates) did not penetrate deep into the filter bed, and were intercepted in the uppermost layer. In contrast, the aggregates formed at G e 200 s-1 (size-homogeneous suspensions with small, compact and regular aggregates) penetrated throughout the full depth of the filter bed, provided the longest filtration runs and generated a minimum pressure drop.
