He completed his engineering degree in 1984 and his doctoral degree in 1989 at the Department of Water and Environmental Technology (UCT Prague). From 1985 to 1992, he worked at the Research Institute for Pharmacy and Biochemistry in Prague. In 1992, he returned to his alma mater, where he has served as an assistant professor since 1992, associate professor since 1998, head of the institute since 2003, vice-dean since 2006, and since 2022, dean of the Faculty of Environmental Protection Technology. He was appointed professor in the field of Water Technology in 2011. He completed international research placements in the Netherlands (1990), Italy (1993), and the USA (2012).
The main topics of his scientific and teaching activities include aerobic and anaerobic biological wastewater treatment, particularly processes that combine both approaches; design and technological configuration of bioreactors; biodegradability of organic substances and specific biomass activity under anaerobic conditions; removal of nitrogen and sulfur compounds from wastewater; microaerobic desulfurization of biogas; minimization of sludge production in biological wastewater treatment plants; energy and material recovery from sludge; intensification of biogas production from biological waste; and decentralized wastewater treatment systems and their reuse.
