The aim of the project is to develop an innovative material based on polyurethane foams, designed to serve as a carrier for nitrifying biomass in activated sludge wastewater treatment plants. The carrier material will be biodegradable within a matter of months, helping to improve nitrification efficiency—particularly during the winter season. The material will be developed as a functional prototype and utility model, and its practical application will be verified using proven technology.
By the end of the project, we anticipate an increase in nitrification efficiency of approximately 30–50%, with product validation carried out through a case study at quarter-scale and semi-operational scale, including full technological balances and an investment return analysis.
The project “Application of Biodegradable Polyurethane Foams for Enhanced Nitrification at Wastewater Treatment Plants” is co-financed with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of the Environment under the “Environment for Life” programme. This project was funded through the National Recovery Plan from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility.
