Sustainable Tools for Evaluating and Reducing the Impact of Combined Sewer Overflows on rivers

Project goals:    

Combined sewer overflows (CSOs), especially in small watercourses, are a significant source of surface water pollution. Currently, there is very limited data to quantify this pollution and to develop systematic measures for its elimination or mitigation. Moreover, there is a lack of a general concept for managing CSOs. The topic is highly relevant due to the significant impact of wastewater from small settlements on small streams, which often also serve as sources of drinking and bathing water.

The aim of the project is to characterize and quantify discharges from overflow chambers at several model locations, to test technologies that improve the quality of overflow wastewater (constructed wetlands and biofilters), and subsequently to develop a methodological decision-making procedure for managing overflow wastewater.

The student will be supervised by senior staff of the Department of Water Technology and Environmental Engineering, with expertise in hydrochemistry, water analysis, and wastewater treatment processes. Other project partners include Prague Waterworks and Sewerage Company and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague.

Financial conditions:    

The position is funded by the project and covers a gross monthly salary of 1.140 EUR (including base salary and project allowances). The project runs until the end of December 2027. We aim to secure additional funding beyond this period.

If the candidate enrolls in a PhD program, they will also receive a scholarship of at least 700 EUR per month. The scholarship may increase based on research achievements and will be provided for a duration of 48 months.

Requirements:    

• MSc or equivalent degree in Chemical/Environmental Engineering. Candidates expected to graduate by June 2025 are also encouraged to apply
• Demonstrable knowledge of and interest in water management    
• Independence, motivation, proactivity, openness to communication, and willingness to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.    
• Ability to conduct scientific work combined with a practical mindset.    
• Laboratory experience demonstrated by completed lab courses, internships, or other prior work    
• Excellent spoken and written English.
