Thesis topic:

Nitrogen removal from anaerobically pretreated municipal wastewater using advanced biological processes

Motivation

Recent development in wastewater treatment favours processes that are highly efficient while being low-demanding energetically, such as anaerobic digestion. This technology, however, cannot remove nutrients (N and P) and its effluents need to be post-treated.

Solution

In this PhD topic, we will study modern nitrogen removal technologies, such as ANAMMOX. The work will focus on biofilm reactors working at low temperature (10-15 °C) and low nitrogen concentration (50 mg N/L).
